All in Order Tricks for Identifying Key Signatures

All in Order Tricks for Identifying Key Signatures Suzy S. What are the keys to identifying different key signatures? Read on for some great tips from Tucson, AZ teacher Lourdes C In reading music, there are a few things that give musicians the biggest headaches. One major migraine-maker is determining keys from the key signature and then remembering the order of sharps and flats. This chart gives musicians a quick way to help with identifying key signatures. Key Signatures at a Glance Major sharps: the name of the key can be found at 1 semitone above the last sharp. Minor sharps: the name of the key can be found at 2 semitones below the last sharp. C has no accidentals A has no accidentals G: F# + 1 semitone = G E: F# 2 semitones = E D: F#, C# B: F#, C# A: F#, C#, G# F#: F#, C#, G# E: F#, C#, G#, D# C#: F#, C#, G#, D# B: F#, C#, G#, D#, A# G#:  F#, C#, G#, D#, A# F#: F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E# D#: F#, C#, G#, D# A#, E# C#: F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B# A#: F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B# Major flats: the name of the key can be found at 7 semitones above the last flat. Minor flats: the name of the key can be found at 4 semitones above the last flat. F: Bb + 7 semitones = F D: Bb + 4 semitones = D Bb: Bb, Eb G: Bb, Eb Eb: Bb, Eb, Ab C: Bb, Eb, Ab Ab: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db F: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db Db: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb Bb: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb Gb: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb Eb: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb Cb: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb, Fb Ab: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb, Fb Written Order of Accidentals and Example Key Signatures Lets work on identifying key signatures by looking at the image above. The last flat in this case is F (Fb is E, in enharmonic spelling). From Fb, count up 7 semitones (half-steps) and keep the enharmonic spellings for E and B (Fb and Cb, respectively): Fb -F-Gb-G-Ab-A-Bb-Cb (B) key of Cb major. Count four semitones up and you get Ab minor, the relative minor of Cb. Even if you dont know the mode, either major or minor, by using this key signature method, you will always be able to find the major and relative minor for any signature you encounter. This next key signature has one accidental. Avoid assuming that this is Bb major or minor. This is actually Fb major. Fb minor is actually E minor, which is a sharp key. This method will help you work through the Circle of Fifths and understand the relationship between tonal arrangements in keys. Other Problems to Avoid Accidentals (sharps and flats symbols) are written in descending order from top right to bottom left on the staff. So, knowing the last flat or sharp requires that you remember the order of sharps and flats, because on the staff, the last accidental may appear higher than the first, which can trick you into thinking its the first accidental. This is Bb major, as an example: Mnemonic for the Order of Sharp and Flats The order of flats is BEADGCF (bead gcf). A good mnemonic is bead the G clef from middle C to the F clef. If you can remember that, just know that for sharps, it will be backwards: FCGDAEB. If you remember only that mnemonic and the counts in the chart above, youll always be in the right order and you can identify keys by their signatures alone with just a little practice. To practice, find any good graphic image for the Circle of Fifths and try this for yourself! Happy music-making! Lourdes C. teaches various music subjects and tutors in Tucson, AZ. Choose the Right Location for Your Yoga SessionsThe ultimate goal of yoga practice is to achieve a unity of body and mind (the infamous “benefits of yoga”) while cultivating mindfulness of the world around you - making it vital to choose the right ambiance for yoga lessons especially important. You would never think of doing yoga during rush hour at a busy intersection. The pollution from the noise and the exhaust fumes would prevent you from achieving the proper state of mind.Yoga lessons in the middle of a busy street migh t seem hip and trending, but doesn't cultivate the mindfulness necessary for serious yoga practice. Photo credit: Seattle Department of Transportation via VisualHunt.comSo whether you are thinking of giving yoga classes at a yoga institute or as private classes, try and find the right location. If you have the chance, set up your yoga courses at a nearby beach. If you are using a rented studio, visit the rooms around the time you plan to teach your lessons. If you find yourself next door to a beginner recorder class, you might want to reconsider.Try to find a quiet place with good acoustics if you want to put on some music during meditation sessions. If you are giving private yoga lessons, you can either:Give the lessons at your homeGo to your student’s homeGo outsideIf you decide on the first option, try and create a space dedicated exclusively to practising yoga. Otherwise, you might have to find another location. For winter, a yoga studio closed for the season or one with room ren tal option and a calm park in the summer are good alternatives for spiritual tête-à-têtes.5. Wear Clothing Adapted to Yoga PosesWhen you go jogging, you are not going to put on jeans or flapping skirts. It’s the same for yoga. Even though it is hardly a fashion show, the proper attire is important when practising yoga.Wearing the wrong clothes (too loose or too tight) will hinder you in your balance, flexibility and, most importantly, your breathing. It will also make it more difficult to flow from one pose (asana) to another. Here are some examples of form-fitting but not constricting clothes that will help you soar to new heights. For women, we recommend:  A high-cut tank top you feel comfortable with. Avoid clothes that are too tight as they will compress your ribcage, or t-shirts with wide sleeves. For your legs, sports leggings are the best. They should be thick enough not to be transparent. That way, you will feel comfortable when flowing from one pose to another. Shorts are another alternative. Avoid clothing that compresses the stomach or rides down when you are upside-down.Some like to wear bathing suits when practicing yoga outside. In terms of underwear, a sports bra that supports well while still letting you breathe properly is essential. Prefer comfortable materials and skin tones so they are not visible through your clothes. If necessary, you can add accessories such as a sweat band or an elastic to hold your hair back, a pair of gloves or non-slip slippers, as well as flat shoes or sandals if you are using a sports hall.A tip: since you will often have to bend down to your students, avoid plunging necklines or t-shirts that are too loose. For men:For a top, a comfortable t-shirt, not too loose or too tight, is perfect. Those well in tune with their bodies can go topless. For your legs, cyclists’ shorts or judo trousers are good choices. The accessories are the same as for women.Don’t forget to take off your jewellery (bracelets, earrings, neckl aces, watches) before a yoga session.Ask your new students to wear form-fitting clothes that will help you evaluate their posture, so you can correct them more easily if necessary.Men who are comfortable with their body can practice yoga topless. Photo credit: ??a? ThFt (slowly back...) via Visual Hunt6. How To Set Up Your Yoga LessonsThough each type of yoga has its own routines, a yoga session is always set up in roughly the same way. Only the poses and their sequences are different.Yoga classes always start with a short period allowing you to put the mundane life behind you. Invite your students to relax long enough to achieve calmness of mind and body. Breathing exercises can help.Afterwards, you can set up a warm-up and stretching session to prepare the body for what is to come. Now comes the flow of yoga poses. The rhythm of the sequences and the time they are held will change depending on the type of yoga. Insist on proper breathing, making sure they inhale and exhale in synch with every movement. After this phase - more or less lively - you will want to leave your students some time for meditation. This will help them reach the state of mindfulness they are striving for and actively process the benefits of yoga.Don't forget to give your yoga students some time to break free of their daily lives at the start of yoga lessons. Photo credit: Kamila Gornia via Visualhunt.comAfter the end of each yoga session, don’t hesitate to ask your students what they felt so that you can improve your future lessons. Be certain to fix a price per session that is affordable but will still allow you to make ends meet.7. Practice Yoga Daily and Continue Your Teacher TrainingGood teachers never stop learning. Especially in yoga, which is constantly evolving. Therefore, as soon as you can, sign up for further yoga teacher training classes with one of the reputed yoga institutes (such as the British Wheel of Yoga or the Himalaya Yoga Institute, or why not got to India itself?) It might give you ideas on how to improve your own yoga classes. And don’t forget that a good yogi practices yoga every day to keep their body and mind flexible and offer the best of themselves to their students. Here is some good advice to give your own students: it is better to train for 15 minutes several times a week than two hours every so often. Now that your yoga class is ready to go, find out if yoga studios near you are in need of teachers. Painting Classes London

Painting Classes London Everything to Know About Painting in London ChaptersChoosing a Painting ClassPainting Techniques for Different MediumsPainting Materials and Art SuppliesWhere to Find Art Classes in LondonFirst, you must know what painting classes near me are out there. This can sound strange: all art is just art, right? Well, as with all things, the answer is a bit more complex. Art can generally be divided into three major categories: literature, performing arts, and visual arts. What we will focus on is painting, which is classified under the visual arts category. If you want to learn more about the different kinds of visual art you can get involved in, you can also check out sculpture, printmaking, architecture, film or mixed media.Learn to paint in the capital of England!AcrylicStarting with acrylic painting techniques, you’ll find are analogous to the ones you will find in other mediums. The first, called dry brush, is exactly as it sounds: applying paint onto your dry brush and painting onto dry canvas.Washing, in contrast, involves th inning out the acrylic with water. The level of water you use will obviously depend on what kind of color and texture you’re looking for. It is interesting to note, however, that applying enough water to acrylic will give you a watercolor effect (only it will dry much faster).Stippling is a method that involves nothing more than stabbing your canvas with your brush. This technique was employed by famous artists like Georges Seurat, and can give way to incredible detailing.Oil PaintScumbling is the oil paint version of dry brush. It simply means you apply some oil paint onto the canvas as it is, which tends to give paintings a hazy or unfocused atmosphere.Alla prima is the wet on wet technique of oil painting. This means that you will have to apply the paint on the first layer without letting it dry. This tends to give the painting more texture.WatercolorFlat wash is what you typically think of as a general technique of water coloring. It means that you will dip your brush into wat er and then paint before applying it to your canvas. This goes along with the wet on dry technique, as you will create a flat wash on canvas, wait for it to dry, then apply another flat wash.Wet on wet, however, is a technique that means wetting a segment of the paper first and then applying a flat wash onto it. This creates more of a dreamy effect that typifies watercolor paintings.Whether your painting a portrait, still life or simply sketching out your preliminary ideas, every canvas normally should undergoes some sort of underpainting. This technique is when a layer of non-white paint is applied to canvases as a layer that will both deepen shading and add texture to your works. Note that this normally isn’t a technique applied to watercolor.Find painting courses near me here.Painting Materials and Art SuppliesWhile creativity is at the heart of artistic creation, you will need to buy some basic materials and supplies in order to get started. Whether you take part in workshops or are part of a painting course at a university, it is important that you investigate what kind of materials will be available for you to borrow. For example, many professors tend to have an extra palette or brushes that they won’t mind letting students use if they’re strapped for cash. On the other hand, workshops are likely to supply the materials that will be used during the session. If you are taking part in a beginners course, you will most likely need to get some basic colors of acrylic paint. Luckily, either your instructor or the people at the art supply store will be able to give you some recommendations on what colors will be necessary for beginners.Find painting classes in Manchester.Requirements for class don't have to be stressful or expensiveWhile paint for watercolor painting is extremely important, the paper which you will be painting on is equally as important. Because watercolor is normally done on paper and not canvas, the type of watercolor painting your will be doing will effect the thickness of the paper you will need. A rule of thumb is to purchase several paper of a range of thickness to be able to experiment with.Oil painting courses will require a bit more of an investment. If you’re a beginner, only buy a couple of the basic colors as oil paint can get expensive. If you’re a more advanced painter, consider getting an easel.Where to Find Art Classes in LondonSearching for painting classes in London has its advantages. From workshops, adult classes, kids art courses, to finding an open studio - finding the type of art instruction you're looking for is just a click away. Many art classes in London, like London Art Classes, focus on everything from drawing classes to painting. If you're looking for institutions that offer evening courses, the Art Academy of London offers both classes in studio art and for refining drawing skills. Finding tutors from these organizations, or from the many Superprof tutors available to you online, wil l enable you to develop your artwork at your own pace.Another great option for people living in the city is not necessarily to enroll in an art school, but to take advantage of the art workshops that pop up around the city, all year long. Websites like Obby and Eventbrite can help you find an upcoming painting event close to where you live.If you're simply looking for places to develop your own self-practice, consider renting a part of or a whole art studio in the city. Many artists, in fact, choose to share a space with other artists as a way of both expanding their supplies and having a space to store all of their materials.Other than that, practicing in the parks of London can be a great opportunity to practice plein air painting. The only downside being, of course, the weather! No matter where in the UK you live, you can find a painting tutor with Superprof.

4 Tips to Prevent Summer Slide

4 Tips to Prevent Summer Slide Summer slide is the tendency over the summer months for students to lose information and important gains made during the school year. Taking a break from the workload and routine of the academic year is crucial, but so is implementing a bit of structurewithin the overall relaxationto keep your child fresh, alert, and ready for the fall. Tips to prevent summer slide include reading activities, engaging field trips, and interactive games. Keep reading to learn about four strategies for preventing summer slide: Tip #1 to prevent summer slide: read Reading is a very beneficial way to prevent summer slide. It exercises many of your childs faculties, including comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Provide regular access to books by choosing a weekly or biweekly time to visit the public library or a local bookstore. The summer months provide plenty of time to plan a variety of engaging activities around reading. These activities can include introducing higher-level books to your student or finding a unique way to track your childs summer reading progress. Public libraries also often have great summer reading programs that can increase motivation and engagement, so be sure to research offerings. [RELATED: 6 Activities to Keep Students Learning This Summer] Tip #2 to prevent summer slide: journey out on field trips Fields trips are a fun opportunity for your child to simultaneously maintain learned knowledge and continue learning over the summer months. These trips can include visiting museums, the zoo, or a local educational center. Childrens museums are especially interactive, and science and field museums often have tactile and engaging activities for children. Dont be afraid to take your child to an art museum as well; many art museums offer child-friendly tours and activities. Additionally, you and your child can: Go to the park and explore the surrounding environment. Take a hike at a local nature reserve. Visit your local honey farm or community garden. Youll want to both limit and take advantage of screen time; theres a wealth of apps and online games that will challenge your child intellectually, but too much screen time can have a negative impact. Point your child to board games as well. Strategy games and word games like Scrabble or Bananagrams can provide many benefits. An online search will yield an abundance of new games that are age- and grade-level appropriate for your child. If your child is interested, encourage them to create a board game of their own, complete with rules, the board, and the pieces. Tip #4 to prevent summer slide: cook and garden Involving your child in everyday activities can be a great way to keep their minds active and engaged. Cooking and baking are fun and interactive activities that help children engage with math and science. For example, going to the grocery store to prepare for these activities can help your child maintain everyday math skills while school is out for the summer. Additionally, whether it be at your own home or at a local garden plot, you can start a garden with your child. This can teach similar skills to baking and cooking, and can allow students to grasp the concept of garden-to-table recipes. Qualifications for Teaching Russian in Schools

Qualifications for Teaching Russian in Schools How to Get the Necessary Qualifications to Teach Russian ChaptersThe PGCE and Teacher Training ProgrammesApplying for Teacher Training ProgrammesFinding Teacher Training ProgrammesResearching Programmes“Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” - Winston ChurchillWhile Russian has never been the most popular language to learn in the UK, it’s started gaining popularity in recent years.  A lot of this can be explained by Russia’s importance on an international level. Russia has a lot to offer. Russia is drawing in students with its literature, history, art, and sciences, not to mention its history, both ancient and modern. So how can you teach Russian in schools? We're going to assume that you've already completed an undergraduate degree, such as a bachelor's degree in Russian, and are looking at universities to study a postgraduate qualification in order to make you eligible to teach in UK schools. You won't necessarily need to be a native speaker to teach Russian as a foreign language. In this article, we're going to look through how you can find a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and other teacher training programmes and apply to them. Since this is a postgraduate qualification, it's the equivalent to a masters degree. As you saw, you won't be studying your subject but rather focusing on the vocational aspects of the teaching discipline and the aspects of teaching as a profession.Applying to a PGCE isn't the simplest process in the world. (Source: Free-Photos)Upon completion of your PGCE, you'll be able to teach in British schools both in the UK and abroad.  So here's how you can apply to the PGCE and other teacher training programmes.UCASThe University and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS) offers a number of ways for aspiring teachers to get on courses. There are over a dozen ways to get into teaching. The PGCE is one of the most common ways to do this. The right route depends on your background and your aspirations.Let’s have a look at the steps you need to take.Check out  Russian lessons London.Applying for Teacher Training ProgrammesApply 1The first stage of applying to a teacher training programme through UCAS is called “Apply 1”. During this stage, you can apply to three different places. Here’s some a dvice:Think carefully about where you choose as there’s a lot of competition for places. You don’t have to use your three choices, but you do have to make your choices at the same time. You can’t make one choice then add more choices later. You can use your three choices as you see fit. Your choices can include different ages, subjects, routes. If you change your mind, you have seven days to change your choices and you can only make this change once.InterviewsBefore you’re given a place on a PGCE, you have to do an interview. Don’t forget that when it comes to interviews:Not every application will be given an interview.Applicants are chosen using academic and non-academic criteria.Once you're on the PGCE, the real work begins. (Source: kaboompics)It’s a good idea to ensure you’re completely free the day of your interview.Responding to OffersIf you receive any offers, you’ll have 10 days to respond to them. Think carefully when choosing.Apply 2If you aren’t offered a p lace during “Apply 1”, you have another opportunity in “Apply 2”.  Rather than making three choices, you can only make one choice at a time. However, there is no limit to how many choices you can make, as long as you only make one at a time.Apply 2 only happens if your choices aren’t successful, you withdrew from your current choice, or you declined offers.  Again, you can apply to any route you like. At this point, you may want to go back to your applications and strengthen them with additional documents and an updated personal statement.  Keep in mind that a decision can take up to 40 working days.Finding Teacher Training ProgrammesApplying to teacher training programmes is all well and good, but how do you find them? There are a few ways to do this. The PGCE is about learning to teach, not the subject you teach. (Source: Pexels)It depends on where you live in the UK:The department of education has a teacher training service to help you find programmes in England. If you’ re in Wales or Scotland, you can use UCAS’ search tool. The application process in Northern Ireland is a little different.  It’s important that you consider the opportunities you find carefully.Check other  Russian language course.Researching ProgrammesThe programme you choose can significantly affect your future as a teacher so it isn’t a decision you should take lightly. This is why you should take the time to do your research. There are different teacher training routes you’ll need to consider.  Similarly, there are different entry requirements. The quickest way to get rejected is to apply to a programme whose requirements you don’t meet! For those in England, you’ll also need to look at the professional skills tests.Think carefully about which country in the UK you want to teach in and decide which age group and subject you would like to teach. In the case of Russian, you’ll probably need another language to go with it.Finding the Right ProgrammeOnce you’ve found t he ideal programme, make sure you check that there are still spaces available on it. It would be terrible to apply to a programme that’s already been filled. All it takes is a quick phone call or an email to find out. Don’t waste one of your choices applying to a programme you have no chance of getting on.The application process is far too complicated to explain in just a single article. However, there are plenty of great resources on the UCAS website explaining how to fill in your teacher training application.  Fortunately, you don’t have to complete your application in a single sitting. You can save it and go back to it.Making a DecisionAs we said earlier, you have ten working days to reply to offers. Fortunately, this is ten working days from when you’ve received the decisions from all your choices.Your PGCE will include a lot of studying. (Source: StartupStockPhotos)The training providers have 40 working days to respond to you with an offer or a rejection. However, these working days don’t include the days between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day as UCAS is closed.  Of course, you can get responses before the end of this 40-day period. There are a number of responses you can get from the training providers.Unconditional Offer: This means that you’ve met all the academic requirements. However, there may still be non-academic requirements that you have to meet.Conditional Offer: This means that there are further conditions to meet. They’ll tell you what these conditions are.Withdraw: This happens if you don’t attend an interview or don’t reply to the training provider. Fear Not The Dorm

Fear Not The Dorm The thought of college elicits no response stronger than that of the dorms, and for incoming college students that response can be a fear of uncertainty. The inevitable questions will line up with roommates, space, cleanliness, bathrooms and other floor mates. However, in reality, dont stress yourself out about the dorms. You could be worrying about what could potentially be the best year of your life. We will have another article dedicated solely to roommates. You will be able to view your dorms size before college. Your colleges website should list every dorm rooms amenities and size. Most of the dorms are about 13x13 feet; however some can be much larger. Your dorm room is likely to be about the same size of your own bedroom at home. Imagine fitting two beds and two desks into that room. It is small; however, there are many ways to maximize space. Some roommates find it beneficial to either loft or bunk their beds. Your college will offer both options. If you decide to bunk your beds, ask your roommate if he/she has a history of wetting the bed. Buy a lie detector test before accepting a stoic no if necessary. You do not want to be on the bottom bunk of an embarrassed liar. This will give you more room; however, if your roommate crawls up into bed later than you do, then he/she might wake you up. Many students loft their beds, which opens up a lot of dorm room space because students can then put their desks or a couch under their beds. However, you will hit your head on the ceiling at least once. This would be perfect for you if you already sleep wearing your bicycle helmet. There is a respectable chance you may fall out of your loft or top bunk as well. That is the hard way to find out how much vertical space you have in your dorm. Also, lofting your beds will keep people off it. When friends come into your room, they will not sit on your bed. Leaving your beds on the ground will be the simplest solution; however, it will take up more space. However, when you are not sleeping your bed can serve as a couch for watching television or playing video games. You and your roommate should decide what you are going to do within the first week of school, and if there are problems, simply change it. Lofting or bunking your beds is not as hard as it seems, and it only takes a couple hours. These two options can free up space in your room; however, they will make sleeping more difficult. But, you may not need that much dorm space. You will simply sleep, study and sometimes relax in your dorm room. Your dorm should have a lounge where you can watch television, play board games or just hang out. The lounge will be fairly large, especially compared to your dorm. Also, there will likely be coffee shops on or near campus, and your college should have a recreational center. Also, the library will be the best place to study. These all give students options to get out of the cramped dorm rooms. Your small dorm will give you a reason to get out and enjoy college, and you will likely thank it for that. Your dorm will be as clean as you want it to be. If you are interested in calculating how much human skin is actually in dust, your dorm might make a good laboratory for your project. However, if you come from a clean house, and you want your dorm to be an advertisement for Mr. Clean, then invest in a vacuum and dust often. On the positive side, you have no obligation to clean your room, as long as your roommate is all right with a messy room. You should try to clean as much as your roommate does. If you see him/her taking out the trash, then you should next time its full. The only times you will need to clean the dorm room is before breaks, and when you are moving out. Bathrooms could be interesting in your dorm. Some dorm rooms come with their own bathrooms/shower/sink. If that is the case, then this is one less concern. However, it is one more thing that you have to clean. If your dorm room does not have bathrooms, then you will need to utilize community bathrooms. You will be sharing one or two bathrooms with 15-50 people. There will be anywhere from three to seven showers. The bathrooms can be plain awful to decent, depending on how old your dorm building is and how often the university reconstructs them. Problems can occur in the bathrooms, ranging anywhere from having to wait for a shower, to members of the opposite sex confusing which bathroom belongs to which sex, to overflowing trash. However, there should be cleaning people who take care of the bathrooms, but keep in mind that they will not be using the bathrooms; so they might not clean them thoroughly. Also, your bathrooms wont have the extra soft, yet durable Charmin toilet paper, and it might feel closer to tree bark than actual toilet paper. There may even be fungus or mold in your showers; so make sure you wear shower shoes every time. Some people may even tell you that you will actually feel dirtier after your showers from just being in the shower. However, that is not true as long as you wear your shower shoes. The bathrooms are likely to be mildly disgusting consistently throughout the year. The best way to combat the bathrooms is by wearing something on your feet in there at all times, and never resting your toothbrush on any sink or counter. Your other floor mates will be what you make out of them. Your future best man could be the guy who lives next door to you in your freshman dorm. If you opt to lock yourself in your dorm room, then you might hate the people you live around. If you meet them and give them a chance, then they could become your best friends. The people who live in your dorm are going to make or break your freshman year. They could make it the best year of your life or an absolute prison. The choice is mostly yours. You are not going to like everyone around you, but youre likely to become great friends with a lot of them. Essentially, you could wake up everyday with 15 of your best friends and the whole day ahead of you. Consider waking up every Saturday morning with this on the table. But, you will pass on all of this if you lock yourself in your dorm the first week of school. Our strongest recommendation is that you introduce yourself to everyone around you on the first day. The experience of living in a college dorm is the citadel of college life on campus. Your dorm will be small and the bathrooms will be gross, but if you make the most of your situation, then your floor mates can make up for all of that. It seems horrible, living in a small cramped place with someone you dont know, using a bathroom that makes you want to shower in a bubble suit because its that disgusting. However, if you can put those thoughts aside, then you could be on your way to the best year of your life. Time Management on the GMAT

Time Management on the GMAT GMAT MBA Admissions Blog How can you manage your time while taking the GMAT? I often get asked this question. For most people, the Quantitative and Integrated Reasoning questions pose the most significant time pressures, so in this post I will be focusing on those two sections. Perhaps surprisingly, my number one piece of advice is usually to worry less about time. I consistently see people make small mistakes when they get stressed about time and start trying to rush their work. If you do this throughout the entire test, you are likely to get more questions incorrect than you would if you go more slowly and don’t make it to the last few questions. It is more important to take your time and try to get all the questions you answer right than it is to answer every question. That being said, there are still a number of techniques â€" from guessing strategically to plugging in the answers â€" that can help you save time without feeling rushed. First of all, be aware of how much time you have. The Quantitative section has 37 questions, which you are given 75 minutes to complete. This means that you have about 2 minutes per question. The Integrated Reasoning section has 12 questions, which you are given 30 minutes to answer. This means you have 2 ½ minutes per question â€" not a lot of time, considering that most questions have 3-4 parts. In the Integrated Reasoning section, rushing can be especially detrimental to your performance, because if you get just one part of a question wrong, you will miss the entire question. On many standardized tests, the best time management strategy is to skip questions that confuse you and then return to them later if you have time. Unfortunately, that technique does not work on the GMAT, because you are not allowed to skip around and answer the questions out of order. Therefore, you must be able to quickly determine whether you can solve a problem or not so you can move on if necessary. If you encounter a problem you have no idea how to solve, guess and then move on to the next problem immediately. You do not want to waste valuable test time stressing over a problem that you cannot solve. If the problem seems difficult, but you do have an idea of how to solve it, try it. It is okay if you spend a little more than 2 minutes on a math problem (or 2 ½ minutes, for Integrated Reasoning). Some questions may take less than 2 minutes to solve, and the questions you quickly guess on will also give you a little bit of extra time. However, if you are still struggling when you hit the 2-minute mark and you are nowhere close to finding the answer, it is probably a good time to guess and move on. When you do have to guess, using strategic guessing techniques (as opposed to random selection) can help increase your chances of getting questions right. Watch out for trap answers; wrong answers are carefully chosen based on mistakes that GMAT test takers expect you to make. When guessing, use estimation and critical thinking to your advantage. For instance, let’s say a problem involves combining two mixtures â€" one solution that is 1/4 bleach and 3/4 water and another that is 1/3 bleach and 2/3 water. The bleach content in the resulting solution will be between 1/4 and 1/3 of the total volume. Knowing this will probably help you eliminate many, if not all, of the wrong answers, increasing your chances of getting the question right. As GMAT Mantra states, sometimes, instead of seekingthe correct option, eliminate the wrong to arrive at the right. Another important guessing strategy is to watch out for questions that begin with the phrase “Which of the following…?” The answers to these questions are almost always D or E. For instance, a sample question might read “Which of the following cannot be equal to X when Y?0?” This is because the test writers want you to spend time working through all the wrong answers before you finally reach the correct one. The Two-Part Analysis questions in the Integrated Reasoning section often follow a similar pattern. For example, if you have a column of possible X values on the left and a column of possible Y values on the right, the correct X value is almost always one of the last two choices in its column. The correct Y value is usually the first or second choice. Knowing this, you can save time either by working through the X values backwards (starting from the bottom) or by plugging in possible Y values first. All these techniques can help you save time on test day, but the most helpful strategy for learning to manage your time on the GMAT is to take a lot of timed practice tests before test day. When you are prepared, you will manage your time more effectively â€" and you will feel less stressed about time on test day!
